My work is process driven. Learning new techniques and applying them in various ways keeps my mind and work constantly evolving.  My work began solely as thrown pieces with only minor alteration. While I still use thrown forms as components of my work my process is now more focused on alteration, slab work and the addition of textural elements through the use of slip, underglazes and carving.

Art, ceramics specifically, is a whole body experience. The combination of aggressive and soft textures serves to not only visually entice, but also to awaken the senses an individual utilizes when they experience my work. This heightened awareness is not only an important message for me to convey to an individual, as it calls the viewers attention to the beauty of an otherwise overlooked utilitarian object, but it is also a key piece of my process. It improves my own personal awareness of my surroundings and of myself as an artist. The only way to advance my art is to continue to examine my life from different surroundings and perspectives.

The plaid pattern acts as a vessel. It allows for the exploration of not only color theory, but different avenues of identity. There are many preconceived notions a viewer may already have of plaid: Pacific Northwest grunge, blue collar worker, a family tartan, a stereotyped staple in any lesbian wardrobe, lumberjacks, etc. Viewers bring these associations to my work. Whether it be a personal memory, or a part of their own identity; it resonates within them immediately. The plaid enables connections; those between the viewer and the work, and those between the artist and viewer. More importantly it allows me to navigate a multitude of identities within myself.  Through the exploration of line and color, patterns and textures I am able to find balance inside myself, between my feminine and my masculine qualities, my past and my present, my vulnerability and my strength. The multitude of patterns and color combinations are endless and leave me pleasantly lost in constant exploration.
